INTRODUCTION
The Greater Kansas City Medical Society (GKCMS) is a chapter of theNational Medical
Association (NMA). This website is intended
for physicians and consumers to find out about activities of the GKCMS at all

that is important for one's health and the practice of medicine. We invite
and welcome comments and feedback.

With the integration of many of the local U. S. medical societies by the early1960's, many African American doctors were re-evaluating the importance of "Negro" medical organizations. In response, W. Montague Cobb, MD, wrote an editorial for the Journal of the National Medical Association regarding the future of "Negro" medical organizations. The editorial puts into perspective the important role of the Negro physician in the delivery of health care in American since the 1870's.

HISTORY OF OUR MEDICAL SOCIETY
Reviewing the history of African American health care in Kansas City is essential to understanding the reason the Greater Kansas City Medical Society was created. In 1962, the Journal of the National Medical Association (JNMA) published an extensive analysis and history of the delivery of health care in Kansas City to African Americans from 1873-1962. The article focused on the development of healthcare facilities designed specifically for "negro" patients, the integration of hospitals in the area and profiled the many Kansas City African American doctors that delivered care in the city during that time span. JNMA Vol 54 (5) Sept 1962.
The June 2009 issue of the JNMA published two excellent articles that reviewed the history of African American physicians and health care in this country. Click on the following links below to download for these articles.
Creating a Segregated Medical Profession: African American Physicians and Organized Medicine, 1846-1910.
Segregation, Civil Rights, and Health Disparities: The Legacy of African American Physicians and Organized Medicine, 1910-1968.
